It’s My Biggest Support System
October 7, 2025

Nina’s life changed suddenly — and in two major ways.
She had just discovered that she was expecting a baby. Right around the same time, her husband left her.
Just like that, with a baby on the way, Nina was facing the overwhelming challenge of supporting herself, her 15-year-old son, and her 22-year-old brother, who lives with a learning disability — all on the income she earns as a certified nursing assistant.
“It’s really tough,” Nina confides. She is struggling to pay a large mortgage and needs to drive an hour each way for work. These challenges, coupled with rising bills and inflation, have stretched her budget to the limit.
Thankfully, friends like you are there to ease the burden for Nina’s family. She’s been coming to the Shalom Center Food Pantry in Kenosha. Here, she’s able to access the food she needs, thanks to you.
“It’s my biggest support system,” Nina says of the pantry. “It really helps me out.”
For Nina, the food assistance she receives at the food pantry isn’t just about stretching her paycheck — it’s about making it through one of the most challenging periods of her life.
Your donations to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin let Nina, and so many other people in the community, know that they are not alone. And with our current Food for the Holidays match, every $1 you give doubles to provide 8 meals!
