Volunteers are our secret ingredient! When you give your time to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, you get something amazing in return, maybe even life-changing: the feeling that you are personally helping to put food on the table for families that truly need it most. We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at our Milwaukee and Appleton campuses and welcome individuals, friends, families, companies, and social groups with open arms and grateful hearts. Thank you for your interest in helping us solve hunger by becoming a Hunger Hero!

Some examples of volunteer activities include: packaging, labeling, and sorting food donations, checking for food quality, sorting meat products, and repacking bulk food products into family-sized portions. Volunteers must be able to stand for extended periods of time, be able to lift up to 15 pounds, and must be at least 10 years old. Children under the age of 16 are required to be accompanied by an adult the entire shift.

Shift times vary based on our calendar and needs, however we typically offer shifts Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. OR 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., as well as select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. by appointment only. What can I expect when volunteering?

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

Closed-toes shoes are required. Please wear comfortable clothing to allow for plenty of bending and moving around during your shift. We recommend removing all jewelry including rings, watches, and necklaces prior to entering our facility. If your hair is longer than chin-length, please bring a hair tie. We also recommend bringing a sweatshirt just in case, especially if the activity involves working with any frozen products and if you prefer, you can bring a clean hat as an alternative to wearing a hairnet.

What will I be doing during my shift?

If volunteering at our Milwaukee campus… the Milwaukee campus specializes in sorting, packing, and labeling food received from warehouses, grocery stores, food collection drives, and personal donations. These donations can range from fresh bakery items, to shelf-stable goods and frozen foods.

If volunteering at our Appleton campus… the Appleton campus specializes in bulk repacking, where you will primarily be repackaging food from large, manufacturer-supplied totes into smaller, family-sized portions for distribution to our pantry partners.

Do you provide accommodations for volunteers with disabilities or accessibility needs to ensure they can participate fully in volunteer activities?

We are committed to doing our best to accommodate individuals with disabilities and ensure an inclusive experience. However, in cases where a disability is severe, there may be limitations on the accommodation we can provide.

What is the minimum age allowed for volunteering?

To be a volunteer, children must be at least 10 years old and accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Children under the age of 16 are required to be accompanied by an adult the entire shift. For school groups, we require participants to be at least 12 years old.

Are there other activites outside of the food bank that I can volunteer to help with?

Yes! We have numerous events and initiatives throughout the year that we could not execute successfully without the help of our generous volunteers! To view a complete list of upcoming events, check out our Events Calendar HERE, and then reach out to the Volunteer Team at either campus to find out more!
