“This Place Is a Blessing”
Deborah moved to America from Nigeria years ago, raising her family in Georgia outside of Atlanta. But she says she recently felt called to move to Kenosha, so she picked up and moved by herself to follow her dreams.
Things were going well enough for Deborah until she lost her job in June. Once her bills were paid, it only took a few weeks before she didn’t have enough to continue to pay her rent at the hotel where she lived. She wound up homeless and spent two nights sleeping outside with no shelter.
Thankfully, Deborah found her way to a local mission that gave her a safe place to stay. And every day, she comes to Open Door Café at Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee, a Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin partner.
“This place is a blessing,” Deborah says. “Every day they feed the hungry … they give healthy food, nourishing food.”
Deborah spends her days looking for work, knowing that at least she can count on a healthy meal every day, giving her the energy to focus on putting her life back together. She couldn’t be more grateful for the kindness and support people like you have given.
