Strength Supported by Resources

Susan is a single mother with two young children. She had a job she loved that provided well for her family of three.

Everything was running smoothly, until one day her car unexpectedly broke down, needing repairs that added up to more than $1,000.

Unable to pay for the repairs, she could no longer get to work, and Susan lost her job. With her good job history, she easily found a new job that she could walk to, but it didn’t pay as much. Money was tight, and she still needed to save up for a car. With the new lower salary, she found herself faced with choosing between paying rent and utilities and buying food.

Thankfully, Susan found a food pantry a few blocks away. The food she could access there was enough to help fill the gap in her budget. Plus, an outreach specialist from Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin was there to help her apply for FoodShare, which provided more than $400 a month to help with groceries. They also signed her older daughter up for free lunch at school. All of these things allowed Susan to save extra money for a car.

She was soon able to purchase a reliable vehicle and secure a job that paid more. She was back on a stable path, and all the while — thanks to kind donors like you — her children were well-fed and had no idea they were facing food insecurity.

Today, Susan no longer needs the extra help of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and its network of partners and resources. But she still visits regularly — now as a volunteer at the same pantry she visited when life’s unavoidable expenses knocked her for a loop. Susan is grateful for the assistance she received in her time of need, and she’s thankful to be able to help others who are facing similar challenges today.

Because of you, Susan and her children had the support they needed to get through tough times. Thank you!
