Strike Out Hunger Hits a Home Run

The first-annual Strike Out Hunger whiffle ball tournament hit a home run on Saturday, September 14 at Appleton Memorial Park. Eight teams stepped up to the plate for a friendly competition to help solve hunger.

The teams played under a sunny sky for bragging rights and the first-place prize of a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers VIP Suite on Opening Day. Team “Brew Crew” beat the competition and took home the prize. Most of these teams were veterans of the softball circuit and learned some valuable lessons about the differences between whiffle ball and softball.  For example, if you don’t manage to hit the ball after three pitches, you have to hit off of a tee! Also, whiffle balls can’t be hit far but they float and are hard to track down in the field. No matter what the game though, sliding home seems like a good idea at the time but hurts a lot five minutes later. But no guts, no glory!

All the teams and fans enjoyed a family-friendly atmosphere. Tournament participants and sponsors helped the event raise enough funds to provide 12,000 meals to the local community.
