Solving Spring Break Hunger

Spring break is a time when many kids are looking forward to a break from school. Unfortunately, for some, this also means a break from having a guaranteed meal during the day.

In Wisconsin, 1 in 5 children don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Many children lose access to their school lunch program during their spring break. A Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin program serving the Racine community ensures parents and families have somewhere to turn during the break, and that they have access to the healthy food they need to thrive.

“There are certain pain points for families with children who are facing hunger. Spring break is one of them,” said Patti Habeck, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin President and CEO. “With this grant we will be able to ensure Racine families have healthy options while school is out.”

This program has been supported by a grant from SC Johnson. It was specifically designed to supply food to students and families in need during the Racine Unified School District spring break. Many students that depend on school meals will not have access to them during that time, and this program will fill that gap.

Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin sourced the boxes and the nutritious, kid friendly foods. SC Johnson volunteers built and filled the boxes to be delivered to the local pantry for distribution to the Racine Unified School District during spring break (April 7-14).
