This Volunteer Is Driving Out Hunger

Todd frequently passed by the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin food bank in Appleton on his way to and from work. He always thought it would be a great place to volunteer once he retired.

Sure enough, one Sunday afternoon Todd came across an ad for the food bank and said to himself, “I think now’s a good time!”

He went to the food bank’s website and contacted the volunteer engagement coordinator. With a commercial driver’s license, Todd was able to jump right in as a truck driver. He fills in for full-time drivers who need some time off or to recover from illness. Todd also tries to be available for mobile pantries or other events, so that there’s never a reason food can’t be delivered.

“I’ve been most impressed by the network of cooperation that Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin has with its partners and suppliers, and to see how that makes everything come together,” says Todd.

Legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort — that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin couldn’t do what it does without the commitment of skills-based volunteers like Todd.

Todd explains his heartfelt need to solve hunger like this: “I know the good that I’ve seen Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin do. And coming into the pandemic, I knew there would be even more of a need.

“I reflected on how blessed I’ve been in my life to never have to go a day without food or wonder where my next meal was going to come from. I realized while I still had the ability to provide this kind of service and be a truck driver, this would be a really good avenue to give back.”

You can help Todd in the quest to drive out hunger with another gift today. Every $1 provides 4 meals. Thank you!
