Helping Expectant Parents in Need

A new initiative from Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and Birthworkers United, Inc., will provide support for expectant parents and children of color — during pregnancy and beyond.

The Nurturing Collaborative seeks to increase equity and food security by ensuring access to food and other resources that provide a nurturing environment for both parents and children who are in the Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community.

As part of the program, families will receive monthly care packages tailored to benefit the parents and baby throughout every stage of growth for their first 12 months of life. The first month might provide swaddles, creams, breastfeeding supplies, and other items babies need during infancy. However, month six may include baby-proofing supplies, introductory foods, and books.

“The fight for food should not be a part of the equation for expectant parents,” shares Vanessa Johnson, founder of Birthworkers United, Inc. “This initiative brings our community together to show that no one is alone. The Nurturing Collaborative is intentional about nourishing and nurturing families along their pregnancy journey.”

Care package items are graciously provided by predominantly BIPOC-owned businesses in the Milwaukee area.

The program also includes workshops on wellness-focused topics that will be offered throughout the year to participants. These sessions will include yoga, cooking classes, and workshops on mental health.
