Brewing for Better

McFleshman’s Brewing Company has been perfecting its at-home beer recipes since 2006, and the Appleton brewery officially opened its doors for business in 2018.

What does beer have to do with feeding our neighbors? Part of their mission is to be ‘an inclusive community cornerstone’ while advancing the craft of beer. McFleshman’s is partnering with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin to be a cornerstone for solving hunger. “Supporting local charities is a great way to give directly to those in need in our community,” says Allison McCoy Fleshman, co-owner of McFleshmans. “If we can help our neighbor, then the quality of life of all community members is just better.”

The brewery employees do not rely on tips for their compensation; rather, they are given a living wage. “A company is only as good as the values on which it stands. We value our team, and a living wage is the least we can do,” explains Allison. Because most people enjoy tipping their bartenders, any tips given by customers are donated directly to the chosen charity. This quarter, proceeds are going to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. “Since most hospitality industries rely on tips, it’s a socially built avenue to fundraise. By selecting charities to support throughout the year we can redirect resources to those that have an infrastructure to help those in need.”

It’s partnerships like this, with innovative and generous ideas that make for well-rounded communities. Small businesses in the restaurant industry were perhaps hit the hardest during the pandemic, but the co-owners of McFleshmans insist that they don’t regret any decisions that put their employees and community members first. “The work that Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin does is so crucial to the wellness of our community. When I’m having a pint with family and friends, I like to raise a glass to those who are in tough times. I feel privileged to be in a position where I don’t experience hunger, and so by supporting Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, we can focus efforts such that more pints are raised to help our neighbors who need it.”
