Math Skills into Meals

Mathnasium is a math-only tutoring center, with locations across the Greater Milwaukee area. Kids go to Mathnasium centers to receive homework help, challenge their skills, and prep for the ACT. As part of the program, students earn rewards cards for all their hard work. With their rewards cards, students are able to buy items like Legos or snacks. Some students save their rewards to purchase bigger items like an Xbox or Nintendo Switch.

But this November, many students decided to give up their rewards cards for causes much bigger than themselves. Staff at four Mathnasium locations in Wauwatosa, Mequon, Brookfield, and Hartland, decided to make November a month of giving. Students were encouraged to donate their rewards cards to a charity of their choice. At the end of the month, staff exchanged the donated rewards cards into cash and donated the money. With Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin as one of those charities, these math students were able to provide over 400 meals to people in need.

Jillian Pipkorn, the owner of these four Mathnasium locations, explained that the chosen charities have a real and immediate impact on their local communities. She was thrilled to see so many students excited about giving. “We really had no expectations going in. But we are blown away, by not only the generosity of the students but by the conversations about giving back that students were having, too.”

These students certainly earned an A+ from us. Thank you, Mathnasium students!

If you’d like to encourage a group of students or friends in the spirit of giving, consider hosting a virtual food drive!
